The most important features of Old English (450-1150) include a rich native vocabulary, extensive resources for forming new words, and a minor group of verbs like "will" which acquired features typical of preterite-present verbs. The verb "willan" in Old English evolved into a modal verb expressing volition in Middle English and eventually formed a system with "shall" as both verbs weakened their lexical meanings and became auxiliaries.
