A thermodynamic potential is a scalar quantity used to represent the thermodynamic state of a system. It was introduced by Pierre Duhem in 1886 and further developed by Josiah Willard Gibbs. The internal energy U is a main thermodynamic potential with a physical interpretation, representing the energy of configuration of a system of conservative forces.
